i have a quick question. it´s probably been answered many times before but i havent seen it yet...
why is it that my 91 e.gt speedometer only goes to 80/85mph when every other escort i have seen it goes to 120 mph? since it is a gt shouldnt the speedometer go higher, not lower?

100% positive it is an 1991 escort gt.
one of my friends said that my guage panel may have been replaced.. but that would make the speedometer read wrong unless it had the same speed layout wouldnt it?
is there any way to put a new guage panel with a 120mph speedometer in it? i am tired of when i am flying down the road above 80mph having to guess how fast i am going.. i have had the pin all the way to the beginning of the odometer...
its annoying as hell not knowing how fast that really is..

Yea that sux. My speedo only goes to 85. Seems that in the 80s there was some federal regulation that said all speedos can only go to 85. The fed thought it would cut down on speeding. Riiiiiiiiiiight. That´s why they repealed the law in the early 90s. So it makes sense that a 91 gt would have an 85mph speedo. I think it would be possable to switch a later 2nd gen speedo though.

I have the 120 in my 93GT. I´ve pegged the 120 before in it...but looking at my 7k redline I´m pretty sure the tranny isn´t geared for anything much above that. I´m hoping to be radared hitting 130 with the turbo running right.

As far as i know you can switch out the 120 with the 85 no problems, the gears inside the cluster are already geared to make up the difference because i beleive it uses the same speedo cable, (not 100% posative, one of those hearsay things) you would have to change the whole cluster, not just the plastic speedo face

cut down on speeding... hahaha that´s the most retarded thing I´ve ever heard...

I actually know someone who put a bicycle "speedometer computer" on his saab 900 turbo and it actually works! hehe I think that´s kinda neato.

i might just be up for that offer.
one question though, would that mess with the value of the car.. seeing as how the mileage is on the speedo guage?.. i know that i will most likely never sell the car, but i sure dont want "incorrect mileage" to be on the title if i ever do..
and kenny, [email protected] email me if you do decide that you want to sell it.

Thats exactly what I was wondering. I´ve seen Canadian 1st gen speedos that were Kph, but had the Mph in small writting like we have the Kph in the US that went to 110 Mph I think. I was wondering how hard it would be to get my hands on one of those, and just make a new face for it with Mph being the main numbers. Any one think this is do-able???

actually 91scortgtboy the whole speedometer(which includes the odometer and face) would have to be replaced. if you just replaced the face the speedometer would still read the same as if you had your old face still on it.. ex. your pin would be at 65mph but you would really be going 45..

and for you pimp_scort_89_gt, you could make your own guage faces like i did.. or you could have me make them, email the picture to you and have you print them out professionally for yourself.. it would not be hard to do.. for mine i just took the kph off.. i could do the same for mph for yours.. or anything else that you would want done.. email me if you want me to.
