Ok so my 98 Tracer is an automatic and i am swapping it to a 5spd. As i was searching the subject i read somewhere that i will also need to swap the PCM when i swap the transmission. Well today I went to a local guy that deals mainly with just escorts to buy all the parts i need, and he said i did NOT need to swap the PCM. He said i would only need to swap the pcm if i was converting a 5spd to an automatic which is the oppisite of what im doing. If somebody could clarify this for me it would help a lot. I just don't want to change my PCM if i don't need to. Thanks.

If you don't swap the PCM you're going to get a check engine light telling you that your automatic transmission has failed because the PCM commanding it to shift and it's not shifting (duh). Computers aren't alwas as smart as you think they are. If it believes it's attached to an automatic, it won't know when you swap to a manual.

So no, you don't NEED a PCM swap, the manual will work fine with an automatic PCM. But get used to the check engine light.
