You may be pushing against the wiring. I always try tucking the wiring in different spots until I find the spot that will allow the HU to sit correctly.
Yeah, the dash in the 3rd Gens are really tight when it comes to installing aftermarket HU. I know when I added my four channel and two channel amp the RCA cables were hard to maneuver around so the HU would slide in completely.

Sounds like the upper clips are not latching on. I would check the clips on the adapter and make sure they are setup correctly. I didn't have to cut my dash at all when I installed my adapater face.

I would. That, or crutchfield. Just make sure you get the correct one - premium sound (with CD button on radio) or without premium sound

I just bought the Scosche brand panel, IMHO it's much nicer than the metra one and actually attempts to match the curvature of our dash and original unit!

Old thread but if you have the patience, 2003 only Escorts came with a CD player. The radio plate has the correct curvature and rear defroster button placement since it's stock with the CD cutout.

The 03 faceplate needs some "massaging" to get an aftermarket stereo into.

? where can i find this install kit? ive asked around at the local audio shops but they keep telling me that they cant find em. can u help me?
I got an aftermarket dash replacement from autozone for like $55, it works great, moves rear defroster to drivers side & illuminates climate controls when lights turned on. Just need a couple new screws to mount them, and to get the old dash out, the center control is a cable that runs to the driver's side center dash, so you have to disconnect ext it down there, it's just a small clip that you push to disconnect the cables (see pics). But well with the investment

Thanks for this information!

I bought an aftermarket radio plate on eBay a while back. Sadly, the far right control mounts poorly from the back. I've had it unclip itself, fall off and into the "hole' in the middle of the dash on a long trip. Very poorly designed. Currently, one side is hanging loose from the backside. I believe the knob is the only thing holding the control assembly in place at this time. Once again....very poorly designed. I'll just deal with it in the meanwhile. But I will be looking for 1993 Escorts in the salvage yard in the future. Thanks again.
