I just finish the installation.

The Scosche panel had everything ready, the only thing that I don´t like from it is the illumination, it looks like if it was very old (older than the 10 year old car).

Anyway, I guess I can change the bulbs now that the access to them is very simple.

In my Scosche panel, it came with the rear defrost switch and the wires attached to a white square connector, it matches to the square connector that comes from the right of the factory radio (you can see the 4th picture of the first page on this topic.)

You need that box. The Metra kit uses an electroluminescent light and that box is required to drive it.

Metra vs Scosche install kit

Metra vs Scosche install kit? Which is better and why. From what I can see so far the main differences are the Scosche has the rear defroster switch (round now) in the original position while the Metra moves it to the left. It looks like the Scosche kit also comes with some side brackets for added stability of the head unit. None of the pictures of the Metra kits I have seen show that. Supposedle the Scosche kit you can just pop the old controls in without any cutting or drilling. The only other things I have heard is that the quality is lower on the Scosche and the lights are better on the Metra.

Which one would you buy/use if both were available?

I have the metra on my green car, because I got it cheap from the junk yard. I prefer the scosche style, because it is more rounded... but for $5, I'm not gonna complain.

wow I wish I had read this a year ago when I installed my metra faceplate. I got it from crutchfield w a kenwood head unit, and I was pissed with the quality of the metra because my head unit kept falling out/ getting pushed into the dash. eventually about two months ago my crimped wires fell apart so i had to rewire it and I soldered it this time. It turns out I had that cage thing in upside down, so it wasnt clipping in correctly. Now it fits perfectly and looks much better. My defroster switch always worked correctly, but only four lines in the rear window element actually heat up so it doesnt matter much anyway.

Newbie to the site. Just installed a stereo in my son's 99 Escort ZX2. Used a Scosche install kit which worked great. I have a problem that the rear speakers do not work.

The wires to the back right speaker are orange and blue while the wires to the back left speaker are pink and purple. There are 4 wires that come up to the wiring harness that are the same colors but when I use an ohmmeter to test if they are the same wire, they are not. I see about 4 ohms of resistance to the back speaker wires when I touch the front speaker wire connections on the harness.

So I guess I have a couple of questions.

1. Does anyone know where the back speaker wires come to in the dash?

2. Are the speakers jumpered together somewhere that I would see resistance from the rear wires to the front wires?

Any help is appreciated.

I also bought my whole setup from crutchfeild...everything went together so easily.

i didnt have to cut anything i just had to tuck back the factory harness towards the glovebox.

My problem is we can't get the factory unit out. I bought the Scosche kit with removal keys. We insert the keys and try pulling/wiggling out, but barely any movement (two different men tried). We removed the climate buttons from unit, released the white climate circle from bottom left side and also disconnected battery. The car is a 1998 ZX2 (no spoiler). Father-in-law thinks the radio is screwed in at the back somehow.

Any ideas?

It isn't screwed in unless the PO did it. You insert the keys as far as they will go, pull them apart, and pull out. You may have wiggle it but as long as the climate cable is unhooked the radio should just pop out.

We finally figured it out. The eBay seller sent the wrong size removal keys. I went to a local car audio place and he tried pulling it out as well. Wouldn't budge with my tool, but did with his in seconds.

End result.. I have a new cd stereo with aux for the iPod. Awesome!

Now... anyone want to link me to a ZX2 speaker install guide?

I bought a kit that didn't come with the black box, is there a place i can buy just the black box to illuminate the climate controls??? what exactly is the name of this black box???

is there away around the box to illuminate the climate controls??? any help would be greatly appreciated.

No special removal keys needed to get the radio and heater control module out, just use a heavy gauge steel coat hanger. I had to remove the plastic coating from the steel before it would fit in the holes. On my 2000 third gen escort no need to remove heater knobs, just disconnect the climate control cable as posted previously.
One hole at a time insert the "special tool" with a little angle toward the outside of the case, push in and you will hear a click if you have hit the right spot.

I had someone else install my first deck..looked just like the pic..my alternator went out and the mechanic thinks its because of my amp (1200 amp for 750 sub only one sub) my rear speakers work but my front ones don't. Could this be true that the amp fucked up my alternator?

I took my faceplate off when my alternator was going bad and my battery wouldn't hold a charge. I had the windows open and it rained on the faceplate and now it doesn't work. Can it be fixed?

I bought a new deck and installed it myself. But..I didn't realize how the keys worked and ended up ripping the plastic holders. The climate controller thing with the white tab and plastic gears ripped out of the frame. I don't know how to put it back on! Please help? Its the dial for temp (hot/cold).

I had a blue wire that didn't go anywhere, is that the power antenna?

The black box wires..they were left out in the old deck..where do I connect them?

My lights in the automatic stick shift that light up the P R N D are too dim or not working at all..how to fix?

The weatherstripping/trim around the windows is corroded. how to make look new?

Do you have dry rot on the filter connector to the engine from the air filter?

WOOHOOO thanks for the write up, the temperature cable was kickin my a$$. I got the Scosche kit with wiring harness from ebay.

One problem which color wire, I think its the orange is for illumination control???? The sony radio uses orange for this.
