Well, the shifter dropped on my 98 ZX2. I know, common issue with several "fixes". I personally would like to just replace the shifter base/bar assembly but it isn't available from Ford anymore. However, I found that I can still order this part through Mazda for a Protege! I know that the bar/base from a BG Protege is the same as one a 2nd gen Escort and according to this thread, a BJ Protege bar/base is also a direct swap. shift linkage differances?? I have no idea about BJ Protege and Protege 5 compatibility though.
The question I have is: Will any of these also work on a 3rd gen or ZX2?
Has anyone tried to install a 3rd gen shifter base/bar into a 2nd gen or a Protege one into a 3rd gen? I don't really want to spend $150 on the part just to find out that it won't fit. Anything I find at the U-pull is bounded to be rusted out just at this point. Not to mention, there weren't any Escorts or Proteges when I went a few months ago and I don't feel like wasting an afternoon looking for something that isn't there.

Well, I guess since nobody knows I get to be the guinea pig. I ordered the bar for a 93 Protege LX with the BP. We'll see if it fits.

I have no idea, good question though
Somebody has to have swapped a 3rd gen G-series into a 2nd gen LX and knows what fits. I know that the shift linkage bar is different between an LX and GT due to the difference between the F-series and G-series transmissions. This difference is also reflected in the part numbers for the SOHC and DOHC Protege models but the stablizer bar/shifter base is the same part number. Worse come to worse, I can cut the bar off the shifter base and weld the ZX2 bar onto it. I also made the discovery that you can still order brand new MX-3 Recaro seats from Mazda, if only they didn't cost $1500 each. You can also order the cushions which still cost quite a bit. It's kind of funny to think that those have been sitting on a shelf somewhere for over around 30 years.

the shift linkage bar on 91-96 is turned the opposite way as 97-03s where it hooks on to the tranny with the bolt through the hole on the piece that goes in and out for gears, dunno name. i found out when doing a zx2 tranny swap on a 91 in 2010 had the shift linkage on there for a week or two and 3rd gear would often pop out one time after putting it in that gear for wearing the synchronizer there. so stick with same gen if your looking.

What about the other bar? The one attached to the shifter base with a rubber bushing on the end that goes over a stud on the transmission? That's the one I need.

yeah I'm pretty sure those are exactly the same. i usually put a poly bushing on them and they go on the same, same short shifter. yeah i think there the same. never changed it when i did a tranny swap so yeah you should be safe i'd imagine.

I really hope they are the same. Having a source for a new part would be the best solution to fixing a dropped shifter.
