the 2g have a 'give' spring for the side mirrors in case they get clipped. Also, I think it would look better without it mounted right in the exterior window area.

That's a pet peeve of 1st gens for me - the fact that the mirrors are mounted so far back. I've thought of just re-locating them farther forward, too. Break-away mirrors would be nice, but I don't think the 2nd gen mirrors would look right on the 1st gen body.

I think a Tempo mirror would look more appropriate given its shape. It's a tad larger, though, especially the motorized ones. The only issue would be mounting it properly to the spot between the door pillar and sill...the Escort just doesn't have a very large spot. I have a motorized Tempo piece I can take pictures of and measure to see if it will fit, though I have to find it first :p

What about just moving the mirrors forward, maybe onto the front fender, ala Datsun 240Z? Or even forward on the door would work. The next issue would be filling in the holes where the mirror used to be.

Another possible substitute is the late 80s mustang side mirrors. There's a few of them driving in my area, I'll start carrying a ruler to get the measurements.
