There was a place that was posted on ERDT that made LSD's for the Escort. Both LX and GT. They were like half the price of a Quaiffe. Don't remember the place though.

No it wasn't the phantom grip, it was some other company. I'm not sure if the guy that posted it on ERDT is here or not. Unfortunately, I had the thread on ERDT bookmarked but ERDT is not up.

welding yoru stock diff will work the same but your cornering will be shortened. its will make it harder to turn tght but if your on an oval then you should be ok.

as for the phantom grip LSD. i don't think that is right. all escorts are not going to use the same one. the gen1 trannies are much differnet then the gen2/3/zx3.

^^That's one of the many reasons why no one likes the Phantom grips. They say they will fit but require modification to actually fit. They just don't tell you that right off the bat. Others will argue that the plate type diff that it is is crap but I say if it works then it's fine by me. But there was a place that would convert our open diffs to limited slip diffs for about $500 somewhere. Wish I would have saved that phone number and contact info.

a lot of people do conversions and such very similar to what the phantom grip does. (not a Torsen or viscous or plate type diff, just those plates around the center pin that have springs between them that push against the gears to make them engage under load)

From my research, that type of diff works ok up until around 200whp, then they get chewed up really bad. Talking to a few different rally guys and such, the Plate-type or clutch-type diff is the best type to use, because you can vary the preload between the plates for different driving surfaces. plus, they're a lot cheaper than the Torsen style (which quaife uses).
