I bought a 2003 ford focus in late 2003 and have had the car maintained to the letter since it was bought. I recently took the car to the Ford Motor dealer where I have always had it serviced at and they changed the oil and the brakes and exactly 14 days later the engine went clean out! Their explanation was that the valve seat dropped and destroyed the oil pan and that they was in no way responsible and that it would cost 4200 dollars to replace the engine! The car only had 46000 miles on it! Does this make sense to anyone and how should I deal with this situation?

That's WAY too much to replace the engine. Obviously dealer markup. I assume you have 2.0 SOHC SPI motor since you said a valve seat dropped. This is common on early motors in 97-up escorts/tracers. But it's not as common in later designs and on into the foci's production. Also the mileage is kinda low for this problem too. Was the car ever overheated?
