I have a 2001 Ford Escort I bought in 2002. The front left side makes a knocking when you turn the steering wheel. I have had it in the shop numerous times and they can't find what the problem is. Has anyone else had this problem or can tell me what is wrong?

Could be a lot of things:

1. Ball joints
2. CV joints
3. Wheel bearings

If the knocking sound increases in frequency as the speed of your vehicle increases, you can deduce that it is a problem with a rotating part. If not, the problem exists in a static part.

A little more information...

It is not the cv joints, ball joints or wheel bearings. Those were all checked at the shop when I have took it in numerous times.
When I make a turn it makes a loud knocking noise. I don't know how to describe it any other way. It does not increase with speed. It is only when I turn the steering wheel at a slow rate of speed or even when I am just sitting still and turn the steering wheel it will make a knocking noise.

i'll second the thought on the knock being something in the steering itself. have you bottomed out on something fierce while on an offroad adventure? maybe kick up a big rock? try gettin a friend over and turning the while at a stand still and watch for something popping as they turn the wheel, watch for abrupt movement around where the sound is. look for the obvious rather than a theory of what could be wrong.

Thank you for all the replies. I will try the part about looking at the front end while someone else turns the wheel.
phreak....No I have not hit anything or bottomed out on anything. It just started up slowly and has not stopped yet.
I have talked to another escort owner near where I live and she is having the same problem. She has took hers to the shop also with no results. I will let ya'll know what I find out so maybe it will help someone else. If ya'll think of anything else please let me know.
