will it work??

http://www.fordracingparts.com/crateengine/fourcyl.asp

look at the 2.3L from the ranger. some pretty good numbers...... especially considering it's a BRAND new engine, for only $2300, and it has an aluminum block. could i possibly rig it up for a FWD? or would i have to convert to RWD?

i was thinking of it too.....i wa thinking of mating it to a tempo tranny along w/ a custom mounts/axles...but i was not thinking of the ranger 2.3...i was thinking of the SVO motor or the Merkur XR4Ti.....anyway they are all 2.3....but i was thinking of the tempo tranny might as well work for it but the thing is the 2.3 motor on a tempo is not a SOHC but and internal cam/OHV....but probably the bolt patern for the tranny might fit along w/ the flywheel and the clutch....but there will be a whole lotta fabrication on it.....not to mention the ecu the wiring harness, the fuel management and the extra added weight on the front end and the speedo meter......

You will never fit a Ranger 2.3 in a FWD vehicle without an ENTIRELY custom bellhousing, and unless it's an SVO engine, it'll be worthless since the SVO engine weighs easily 3x as much as an EGT engine, so your car will handle like SHIT.

Tempo 2.3's are ENTIRELY DIFFERENT from ranger/svo/mustang/xr4ti/tbird 2.3's. Engine's from Tempos have always sucked, suck now, and always will suck, from now until eternity.

What I'm trying to say is - it's pointless, too difficult, and you can get better results with a KLZE swap.

Is it really impossible to convert RWD do FWD...i've seen FWD S20DET...and its meant to be used in a RWD car.....

I've seen a corvette engine into a fiero engine bay...which is a Mid engine car....

I've seen toyota supra's Tranny fitted on a Lexus V8 engine....

i've seen pretty strange hybrids lol..i think it could be possible...but it will only need adapter plates and some skils...

Yes it's possible, I have seen a tempo with an SVO/xr4ti 2.3 turbo mounted transversly for FWD. I can't recall the site where it was though.

Theoretically, you can fit any engine in any car. FWD/RWD/AWD/whatever.

However, in this application, a cast iron engine in the front of a Ford Escort is, pardon my french, stupid as fark. 2.3t's weigh more than supercharged 3.8's (supercoupes) and are only 40lbs lighter than a 5.0 V8 w/ aluminum heads.

The one they're putting in the Ranger is still based off of Lima technology from the early 60's.
Really, wow. That is so old school. You only see lima's in industria apps anymore 8O I could've sworn they were using a new DOHC 2.3L in those things.

guys, i'm lookin at the duratec:

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=6162

it says on the site that it weighs 423 lbs. the weight of the ZETEC is 412 lbsshipping weight is about 370 lbs. just to put things into perspective..... it's the 423 lb 2.3L duratec that i'm looking at. it has an aluminum block, aluminum head, 4v/cyl, DOHC. it's on the fricken site i gave you guys. from a 2003 ranger. 135hp, 153 ft-lbs of torque. the block of the zetec is cast iron.

Amazinly the bell housing pattern's are the same from the Tempo, 2.3 SOHC RWD and CVH.

From what I have read, here is what I think...
The Duratec 2.0 and 2.3 are unrelated to the Zetec
Zetecs
Have a iron block and aluminum head
Weigh about 240 pounds
Are long stroke 84.8/88.0 bore/stroke
Duratecs:
Have aluminum blocks and heads
The 2.0 weighs 40 pounds LESS than a Zetec
The 2.0 is oversquare 87.5/83.0
the 2.3 has a longer stroke (94.0) same bore
The 2.3 is .5 inches taller than the 2.0
Both have chain driven cams
Both have really large 35.0/30.0 valves

Ok I know thisis an Old Thread but I didnt see a response on this and being that Nissans are my first and foremost love I will

There are actually 2 different models of the SR20DE(t)
the JDM model Sunny GTIR is an sr20det and that is awd which is the guts for the popular swaps into the newer nissan sentras which are fwd the us model sentras also have a FWD sr20de which is in the sel and the se models and most people just take the turbos either off the jdm sr20dets or just aftermarket disco potato or somthing and turn it into a det
the 240sx which is rwd they use the rwd sr20det which uses different motor mounting points and different mounts all together it sits actually sideways comparied to the awd sr20det
I forgot the cars that come with dets standard but I beleive they are suvs and pickup trucks
and an awd engine mates almost perfect with a fwd tranny
I noticed in my wifes 98 escort zx2 the 2.0 liter looks identical to the nissan sr20de
I was looking into practial swaps for that car but I also want to go bigger or better if I swap out

so just casue you saw a sr20det in a fwd car dosent mean its a rwd sr20 it most likly was teh awd version which runs the same price and availablity
