ok i dont know if this has been answered before because i have looked and have read pages and forums over and over again....I have a 1997 ford escort lx 2.0 spi, what is the complete list of things i am going to need to turbo my car? the list and maybe even some direction lol i have never turboed a car before buti have worked on many many cars and am pretty familiar with most things. If some one can give me a reply or even a pm i would greatly appreciate it!

next here is your list:

turbo manifold: euro rs manifold is a direct bolt (youhave to move the clutch slave )
turbo: obviously
custom downpipe / charging pipe
intercooler is an option but recomended.
fmu ( weather it be 12:1 - 8:1 fmu should be safe for 6-7 psi )

have alot of patience its a really big pain in the ass.

got another question...could i buy a probe or an mx6 turbo set up with the vj-11 the intercooler and piping and all that and just use that? i mean i understand that i will have to still do some fabricating and all but. like say i have the 42 pound injectors upgraded fuel rail and a 2geb eclipse turbo manifold....would the probe/mx6 setup work?

well if your using the dsm turbo manifold you need to use the dsm turbo. so like a 16b i think it is.

also that manifold has no place for an external wastegate. so the turbo you get has to have an internal wastegate.

thats fpr is not an fmu. you need a rising rate fmu either 10:1 or 12:1 ( this will only work if you have a 97 ) if you dont have a 97 you need to change the fuel rail so you will have a return fuel system

$150 ebay turbo is a bad idea..

if you are not going to run electronic engine management then you are really limited to 8psi and under.

Since you are going to be running such low boost there is no need for a large t3 or bigger series turbo.

off the top of my head..

Get a stock dsm manifold
a stock 14b turbo
a ebay intercooler and piping
a fmu (as described above)
exhaust manifold gaskets
exhaust manifold plate fabricated that holds bottom of manifold snug to cyl head
14b flange for custom downpipe that will need to be fabricted
oil / coolant lines run
boost gauge (30-0vac/0-15boost)
buy a bunch of vac line ~6 feet
buy a bypass valve (not a blow off vlave)
borrow a wideband o2 from a friend or bring the car to a dyno that gives you free use of wideband during tuning
get new gaskets for the downpipe/turbo and manifold to turbo
get new exhaust manifold and turbo/downpipe hardware


once car is running start saving for a new clutch and a new engine management system so you can boost 10+psi with bigger injectors and timing control in the future.

Yes that should work. If that flange really is stainless steel, you'll eat up a bunch of drill bit's trying to drill the new top holes. But since it's a cheap ebay item, it might not really be a stainless steel flange. who knows.
If your on a budget, I'm sure you could source a OEM mani for 20 bucks.

The bypass is similar to a blow-off in that it releases the excess boost when you let off the throttle. The bypass sends the excess back into you intake pre-turbo to get the car from running extra rich when it releases the excess boost. The blow-off vents to the atmosphere and causes the car to run temporally rich. My friend has a '09 WRX and his bypass sounds nasty, it is a after-market one. The car will run better with a recirculating set-up from what I understand. If anybody knows more or finds anything wrong with what I have said please correct me.

Did you read the link I gave you? Your missing down pipe, Charge piping with BOV and flange plus oil feed and drain.

oh yeah...well alot of the intercooler kits im lookin at have the charging pipe with bov come with it and would a MHI 14b 4g63 turbo work with that manifold i showed you? im sure it will but i just don want to spend money on stuff that i won be using

I've got a 97 2.0SPI wagon LX with everything (even factory alarm) but it's got the automatic tranny. Do you think this is a good idea? I'd prefer to stick with the auto.

Also: I should be looking into the wrecking yard for all this stuff right?
I don't know what a wideband o2 is, is that a sensor? How/what to tune?

One thing you didn't mention is to move the rad fan to the front of the radiator to make room for the manifold & turbo, I'm certain that's a requirement. Any other "gotchas"?

Hey about that downpipe: is that something in which I can tow the car to the muffler shop and reasonably ask "here's the flange, go make me this pipe"? My 97 is about due for a new muffler anyway so I could have them put in a big exhaust pipe at the same time.
