Hey I've got an 87 escort gl wagon and I want to know what I can put under the hood to improve horsepower in it. Any information on what parts I can get and where to get them would be great thanks.

is that carbeurated? if not you could throw on a cold air extension, a 1.9 racing cam (i think it would fit 1st gens as well) and you could play with your timing a little bit.

Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if you blow your engine up.

i have an 89 LX and there isnt much out there to do to your engine, if you have the CFI then you can play with the air filter, like shiny blue did to his. And you could play with your timing, but i dont know of anything else that you can do to a first gen...

thats a good one james...

ive got a 88 egt, been searching for a while for parts but to no luck. accel makes universal injectors that i assume will fit, theres always and exhaust, cone intake, and stripping some of the interior down (spare, jack, etc, etc) sorry... i know its not completely what you wanted but it gives u some ideas.

i 2 am not responsible if u blow ur engine up or something else

i think you advance the timing 12 degrees but i dont know for sure. about the cold air intake you should just be able to take off the stock air box and tubing and replace it with a cone air filter and aluminum pipe. please correct me if im wrong...

Don't you mean 2nd Generation Escort? Shouldn't 1st gen be the 1.6L version from 1981-1985.5 that look like this:

Not my car but looks excatly like my 1984GT except for the wheels.
Never seen a 1st gen with those rims. :?

1st Generation Escorts were from early 80s to 88.5 and then updated 88.5-90. they had a 1.9L SOHC and a 1.9L SOHC H.O.

91-96 were 2nd generation 1.9L SOHC SEFI & 1.8L DOHC EFI

97-98(?) 3rd generation with 2.0 SOHC and DOHC configs.

98-up are ZX2 generation (2002 marked a remodel of the ZX2 front fascia which is only available in the states  ) 2.0L DOHC and 2.0L SOHC Split port intakes.

Some of thise might not be totally right, don't quote me. 8)

1st gen escort

James , I believe you are off by about two years on 3rd gen scorts . I believe they were offered through 2000 , and then the fokus took over as far as ferd was concerned . However Ford continued to make Escorts as late as 2002 for fleet or lease use . This I know to be a truthfull statement as I myself am the proud owner of a 2002 SE , 2.0 sefi , with power windows , air , cruise, originally a cassette deck, and keyless entry . Bone stock she`s stilla nimble delite to drive . The ZX2 ,I think was introduced as a sporty version to give the Escort buyer something while the Focus was being introduced . I could be wrong on this point . Good overall summary of the scort s developement however . H :D lol my 100th post never thought I`d make that one . how appropriate that ive addressed it to brother James :salute: :hippy2:

my 1989 LX has a 1.9 CFI...and its not SOHC, i belive the GT has a 1.8 EFI and is an SOHC....im not totally sure either... and everything else you said james sounds right
No, I have a 2nd gen GT 1.8L out in my driveway, trust me on that one...it's DOHC.

I'm fairly sure that the 1st gen LX's are SOHC. Otherwise it'd be a Pushrod engine...because i know it isn't a DOHC. the 1st gen GTs are 1.9L SOHC High Output (H.O.) engines. Same 1.9 as the in the LX, just has different heads, intake, tb, cam, etc
