My 1998 ZX2 third gear syncro appears to be going out - when on the track last weekend the last session - third gear would pop out under heavy load. After the car settled and cooled down, I headed home and pushed it hard - did not pop out once. I have not been able to replicate the problem since.

Its not the 3/4 fork - as 4th gear would have been impacted placement wise, and the problem would remain consistent vs being triggered by attrition from track use.

That being said - which transaxle should I be picking? Please note If I am being recommended a rebuild please offer a service along with it because I have already been down that route! I am simply looking for transaxle options!

I understand the unit in the car is the G5M, 99 and newer have different ratios - would they work in my car?

Thank you!

I have a stock G5M out of an '03 for sale. Maybe before you replace the trans, you said it does it when it's hot. Maybe an external trans cooler?

Have you replaced the fluid recently? What fluid do you have in it?

Hmm, my '98 3rd gear tends to pop out sometimes just street driving it, always thought I was just doing something wrong like not putting the clutch all the way in (then again, this ONLY happens to 3rd gear). If you tear down your transmission let us know what you find!

Mine does the same. AFAIK, it's the 3/4 fork tab that is weak and bends.

If I can find a reasonably priced LSD I want to put it in the '03 trans and go through the trans and replace all the wear parts.

I would dump that mercon out and put some synchromesh in. It's not expensive.

I second this. I put heavy gear oil in my 88 escort trans, I’ll never go back to atf. Not sure if you’d want heavy gear oil in a more modern transmission tho. Still Id dump the mercon.

I swapped out whatever was in my 08 focus for the recommended fluid (XT-M5-QS) and it helped a lot with the shifts in that car. It was very difficult to shift especially in the winter, and now it's much easier to shift all year long.
