hi, my daughter has a 1997 ford escort ,

it has the automatic in it.the car works great, but the tranny has a leak in a cover.someone told her it is a castiron cover?is this common?

her car shifts well..so far.

we are also told the escort is a mazda , is this true?

if so which transmissions fit this car?

thank you for your time and replies

Cast iron cover??? Be sure it's not something simple like a few loose pan bolts. Run your finger around the pan gasket, it should be dry.

From my experience with ford cars i have found that most of them were designed by mazda. But what i think what you heard is that the ford escort is almost identical to the mercury tracer, parts and such interchange.

As I understand it, Ford bought Mazda in the mid-90's and based the Escort engine on those of the import compacts. If you're thinking about swapping the drivetrain between a Tracer and an Escort, they are mechanically identical so it should work, I would consult a mechanic first though.
