info: 1997 4 Door Ford Escort LX

I wanna swap out the stock front and rear speaker. This may have already been asked and I appologize if it has, but how on earth do I get the front door panels off to replace the speakers? Is this difficult? How do I get the door handle off? Any help would be GREAT.

Thanks in Advance

PS..any tips on getting to the raer speakers?

Ok your 97 should be just like my 98 so hear is what i did. the first thing is your window handle. If you pull it a smal amount outward you can see behind it. I use a flat tip screw driver to remove a small clapm that runs aroung the center of it. The hanes repair manual saids to use a clothe to pop it off so what ever works for you. On the front there are 3 screws if i remember correctly. once you take them out after removing the window handle you have to pull the door pnl loose there are many snaps on it so give it a good pull. Watch your door handle when you do pull because you'll have to push it through the opening on the pnl when the pnl is loose. Once you do that then the top edge is all that will be left. holding the pnl out at a slight angle lift up on it and with a little force it should slide up and off unless you have power locks and windows. If so then disconnect the plugs and the pnl will come off. As for the rear Deck pnl that is a pain to get out. You have to take the 3rd tail light out and fold your back seat down and set on it. there are several snaps across the back pnl along where the seat rest against that will have to be removed. once all of them are out then comes the part of getting it out. I had a hard time cause the 2 cushions on each side of the back seat. Well I hope that this helps you out and good luck! By the way the speakers size if you need to know is 6 1/2 in the front and 5x7's in the rear. I used pioneer and they sound great but the back is muffaled a bit because of the pnl.

the rear deck is waaay easier to get out if you take those side cusions off first.
in order to do that, though, you have to take the actual seats out--don't worry, though, its easy.
you just find the little button at the under each seat cusion, press it, and the seat pops out. then you have to remove a nut from the bottom of each side cusion. once the nuts are off, just slide the cusion up and out, and bam, the deck lid is free.

Well you learn something everyday! I never knew about the buttons on the seat. I though it would be harder to take it out then to just take the cover off. I'll try that the next time I do upgrades to the speakers. :)
