From the 1.9L trouble code chart - OBD-II system
as printed in the Chilton Ford Escort/Tracer 1991-99 Repair Manual:

  • 0171 - System (adaptive fuel) too lean (Bank #1)
  • 1130 - Lack of upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S 11) switch, adaptive fuel at limit (Bank #1)
  • 1131 - Lack of upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S 11) switch, sensor indicates lean (Bank #1)
  • 1443 - Evaporative emission control system - vacuum system, purge control solenoid or vapor management valve malfunction

....hope that helps ya!

As for where to start... I'd suggest picking up either the book I quoted or the appropriate Haynes repair manual for your car. :D ...or, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, befriend a mechanic and/or find a reputable one in your area.
