1994 Mercury Tracer 1.9 Wagon Auto, problem with rear wiper running all the time.

1994 Mercury Tracer 1.9 Wagon with auto transmission. 87,000 original miles.

Rear wiper runs in off position on dash board selector. Even with the knob in off position, the rear wiper just runs...it didn't used to do that. Removed 10 Amp "Rear Wiper" fuse to temporarily fix the problem, but now A/C does not come on. The A/C does come when the fuse is in. Any information would appreciated. Thanks!

The wiring going from the body through the hatch has broken and two wires are touching together causing your issue.
My solution was to go to the junkyard and get a 2 foot section of the hatch wiring from inside the car, cut the bad section out of your car at the accordion looking piece and use the junkyard wiring to go through and splice it back together. Hopefully all the colors should be the same which will help so you don't match up the wrong wires.

I would bet the 'park' position switch inside the motor has gone bad. although its a good idea to verify the hatch wiring isnt broken. b

I would open the hatch with the car running and see if it stops.

Yes, thanks to all who replied...hopefully I can get to work on it this weekend!

Unplug at the hatch and reinstall fuse.

He would his lose license plate lights and possibly get pulled over at night.
I doubt it, I removed my hatch wiring harness three years ago or so in order to fix it (any day soon!). I've had no license plate lights or third brake light all this time with no fuzz attraction.

Where you and I live. Don't try that in California though. In PA you're more likely to be pulled over for having expired inspection stickers than if your car was actually shedding parts on the road.

As far as I can tell, actual law enforcement is scarce.

POPO here has been told NOT to enforce the law
They do pull you over in my locale for burnt out head or taillights, but generally give you a "fix-it" order, no penalty other than driving to the station soon and showing the completed repair.
I think that's a very good policy.
