Having trouble finding a new idle control motor for my 1990 escort. All parts stores are pulling up is a idle control valve and what I need is a stepper motor. Anybody know a part number or where to find one? I have been looking at advance auto.. Napa.. or autozone.

Check the Rockauto website, they have pictures for most of their parts.

If the first gen Idle Air Control Valve is like the 2nd gen Escorts ones, I dont think its a stepper motor. I think its a coil that gets an oscillating signal of about 1 kiloherz; where the duty cycle (but not the voltage) of the oscillation is changed, to move the coil-and-pin back and forth. So in action it is a valve partly open to control the idle, and which is allowed to go mostly shut when you have the throttle open.
I measured this oscillating signal on my 91 Escort using an oscilloscope.

I have a hand full of these things. Make sure you get one with the right wiring pin out. They changed the plug in the late 80s.

For what it's worth, the first generation ones were two piece, and could be partly disassembled, always a good feature for people who like to tinker with their cars..

Here's the interchange from Rockauto. The coverage is odd, in that it is the last year (only) of first generation Escorts and first year only of second:

    FORDESCORT1990-1991
