If your 89 is a LX, it might be CFI.
Yep, my dad had an 89 LX and it was CFI. If it is going to work at all you would need to make the CFI intake fit onto the new engine and I don't know if that is possible. Not to mention swapping over all the sensors from the old engine.

His is an LX.... I'm 99.99% certain he has the CFI, which uses an identical head as the 2nd gen SEFI. The front engine mount would be a little different, but the engine parts will bolt right on without problems. He would also have to make a blockoff plate for the EDIS pickup. This is a completely possible swap, with minimal headaches.

Basically: swap the intake to the 1st gen CFI, swap the exhaust manifold and EGR system, create a front mount (unless you can modify the stock one), cover the EDIS pickup hole, remove the freeze plug at the rear of the head and install the distro, and install the ancillary devices.

I don't think that the intake from the cfi will work on the sefi head. The I believe the port spacing is quite a bit different. 1.9 HO swap is probably the way to go.

Nope. The 1.9 CFI has the SEFI intake spacing. The HO head has the 1.6L spacing. You cannot swap an SEFI or CFI manifold onto an HO head. Likewise, you can't put an HO manifold on a CFI or SEFI head. The bolts will almost line up, but the ports are way off, including the water jacket port. How do I know? I was given a 2nd gen a couple years ago and considered swapping the intake in.
