Fuel 1988.5 LX Fuel Pump Relay

    I've got a 88 1/2 Escort LX (1.9L EFI, AT) that I inherited and it's been sitting in the back of my garage for years. It used to run fine, but it's been a while since it's been driven. Yesterday I decided to put a new battery in it and try to get it started. It cranks, but won't run. I don't hear the fuel pump hum when I turn the key on. Can anybody tell me where the fuel pump relay is located? I don't see it in the engine compartment. I've got the Haynes manual, but that doesn't talk about the electric fuel pump at all. Is there a good source of electrical schematics for this available anywhere? Thanks.

    In your situation I would get a service manual for the car from ebay. You would want the full set I think, which might be 3 or 4 separate manuals.

    The fuel pump relay is located on the ECU bracket. The ECU and bracket are tucked way up underneath the driver's side dash between the steering column and the driver's door up near the firewall. There are two relays on the ECU bracket, one is brown/black and is the EEC relay, the other is green/black and is the fuel pump relay. If the car has been sitting for a long time you might also want to check the inertia switch to be sure the car hasn't been bumped hard enough to disengage the switch. The inertia switch is located in the trunk area behind the side panel on the driver's side of the car. There should be a black rubber plug in the panel, remove the plug and feel for the switch, the button to reset the switch is on top of the switch. If the car has had gas in it it's also very likely the gas turned into gum/varnish and ruined the fuel pump.

    Thanks for the reply. The gas does have Sta-bil in it, but I have no idea of how long that helps. I did try to reset the inertia switch, but that had no effect, so I'm pretty sure that wasn't tripped. I did order a electrical/vacuum manual on Ebay, so hopefully that will help when it gets here. In the meantime, I'll check the function of the relay... maybe I'll get lucky.

    I've got an '88 Pony I've owned since '93 and now has over 500K miles on it so through doing most of my own repairs/maintenance I've learned a lot about the 1st generation Escort over the past 21 years. Of course there's no way of me knowing for sure, but I'd suspect the old fuel ruined the fuel pump. Several years ago I left a car sitting for a couple years with old fuel in it and it ruined it's fuel pump. If the fuel pump is your problem, in order to replace it you'll have to drop the fuel tank from underneath the car, it's unlike the 2nd and 3rd generation's where you can access the fuel pump from underneath the rear seat. I've had to replace the fuel pump on my '88 Pony a couple times in the past. If you have a set of car ramps and someone to help you push the rear of car up on them that will give you plenty of work room and enough clearance to get the tank out from underneath the car once the straps are unbolted and the electrical connections are disconnected. Without having the rear of the car elevated the tank will not slide out from underneath it where you can work on it.

    I've done in-tank fuel pumps before... I replaced the one in my '93 Jeep ZJ about 6 months ago. At least this one is smaller (the Jeep's was 23 gallons) and it should have a lot less fuel in it than the Jeep did. Thanks for the reply.
