I'm thinking of buying this 1984 5 speed Diesel off of Craigslist. I don't know the miles yet, from the pics it looks pretty clean inside and out. If everything checks out and is good how much would be a good price to pay for it and from the ad it has been stored inside all the time. They are currently asking $1,900 for it and so far it just needs front struts.

Make sure there is no rust in the rear strut towers and that the motor is 100% good as finding parts for the motor is a PIA.
If its 100% rust free, the motor is good and its as nice as you make it sound Id say 1500-2k would be good. But looking at that photo I'm betting it needs new tires so take that into account.

Would you happen to know what commonly goes wrong on the engine and about how many miles the engine lasts for?
Im not all to knowledge on the diesels. I know more about the 1.9cfi motors.
Given the cars age its better to expect anything can go wrong and to keep spares if you intend to drive it regularly. But if their anything like the 1.9l motors I'm willing to bet mechanically they are sound and your biggest problems will be the electronics and aging gaskets.

Makes sense thank you again for the advice. I'm don't have that much experience working on cars, the best I can do it brakes, rotors, calipers, oil changes and tune ups. I think I am going to pass on it as tempting as it maybe.

IMO, $1900 for a vehicle with parts that hard to fine is too much. It's only going to work for you as a daily driver if you have another way to get around while you wait for parts.

Id be more then willing to buy it at that price if its in grate shape. its wroth a lot more then a regular escort due to the diesel motor, but I agree with the second part, not the best daily driver option with its age and hard to find parts. but Id buy it for a play car, slap a little turbo on it and have some fun.

I have an 85 2.0 tempo fresh rebuild and a Diesel engine building for boost with copper head gasket and turbocharged to go in my 84 escort wagon. You can get parts for the 2.0 out of Australia, Iv herd you can get them fairly easily in UK but Iv had good luck through Australia. It’s not just the head gasket, the 8mm stem valves are hard to find in the US for whatever reason although the intake is very close to a Chevy SB exhaust valve. Injection pump is Extremely hard to find but rebuild/seal kits are available.
