Escort gt or protege lx. I'm running a protege lx, and I'm the track record holder in the 4 cyl. class at a track here in WI. :) They are very easy to modify and still look stock. (Exhaust intake cam swap, and tubular manifold. , and so on.)

Dude, a list of 4cyl/16V cars would go on forever! Almost all 4 cyl cars nowadays are 4cyl/16 valve.

I CAN list a few common ones that race with me, though! :)

Ford Escort Gt, Mazda Protege LX, Nissan sentra SER, Chevy Berretta GTZ, Nissan NX2000, Honda civic SI, Chevy Cavalier Z24, Acura integra GSR, Ford Focus SVT, Dodge neon, Diamond Star cars (Eagle talon, mitsubishi eclipse, plymouth laser), toyota corolla, ........ The list can go on.

I have car&driver and motortrend magazines, and calculated power to weight ratios, looked over skid pad readings, weights, braking, 0-60, and 30-70 mph tests. The cars that came out on top (in no particular order) are:

    Ford escort gt
    Nissan Sentra SER
    Ford Focus SVT
    Acura Integra GSR
    Chevy Beretta GTZ

Factoring in the cost, I decided to take the focus sVT and the integra off my potential list. Then I started looking for the remaining 3 and couldn't find ANY berretta GTZ in any j/y around here, which means parts will be both hard to find and expensive. This isn't good for race cars, as things are bound to break. Then I looked at the escort and sentra. The sentra didn't have as good of handling and braking tests as the escort. It was a little faster 0-60 and quarter mile, but not the 30-70. I figured that once we get going, we don't stop, so 0-speed doesn't apply to us. So I chose an escort gt. But I got an awesome deal on a protege, which is basically an escort gt with 4 doors, so I got that. :)

    That help at all?

i'll look into it later today. :) But keep in mind that if the car weighs alot, it won't be as fast as a car that weighs less, but with slightly less hp. And the heavy cars don't corner as well. I'd say to go for a focus svt, as it has 170 hp, and doesn't weigh much at all. (at least the 2 door Hb cars don't.) And they have a limited slip diff, so they get good traction. Oh, and they don't have much weight in the back, which makes them slid the back end alot, which is good for dirt track, but not so good for asphalt. (But if you race asphalt, you can cure that by leaving the back hatch in, and relocating the battery to the back. )

But I'll look into my books on car specifications anyway, to make sure.

Alright so thats the car that has the most horsepower stock. Its going to be hard to find one of them around here for cheap to build for a race car. Most likly the junk yards would be the best bet.

Where are you located? I know of a few here in WI.

Also, one thing about the svt focus: You will have to run at least 15" wheels on it, as it has such huge brakes. And I found that I was wrong about it having a limited slip. It has an open diff.

Some other cars that I found and think might do well:

2002-2005 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. 175 hp at 6000 rpm and 180 lb·ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 6 speed manual with lsd. The problem is that is has extra short gearing, so you may have trouble with picking a gear to run, as you can't run 60mph in second gear.

1994-2001 Acura Integra GSR. Power: 170 hp @ 7600 rpm
Torque: 128 lb·ft @ 6200 rpm. It has a 5 speed, non lsd transmission. A plus with this car, if your rules allow it, is you are able to swap in a jdm B18C integra type R motor that has 197 hp at 8000 rpm and 127 ft·lb of torque at 7500 rpm. It costs $4500, but you get a 5 speed transmission WITH an LSD (two different transmissions were made; one with a 4.4 final drive, and one with a 4.785 final drive) , 8400 rpm red line, wiring harness, factory header, and everything else needed. (I'm pretty sure the ecu is included.)

    http://got-jdm.com/9801-jdm-b18c-98...85-p-22.html?zenid=hn8v9e1scn8dqioc5d35qr5i80

Also, while you're at it, get the air intake (its a factory cold air intake), roll bars (thicker), and struts & springs (lower) from the type R.

To be honest, I'd get the integra if the rules (and your budget) allow it.

Well i want to run the focus svt if i can find one but the thing is we have to run a 14 inch track tire and rim so it would be to small wont it. Theres nothing you can do to the focus svt to make it work. I might not be able to find one cheap but the acura i can deff get but i want to have the most power. Theres no other car thats 16 vlave and DOHC that is higher then 170 horse.

its not all about whos got the most horsepower i personally like the 95 escort gt i have beatin acura's and honda's that all have well over 200 horse and mine was about 150 withe the mods im guessing. its about set-up and learning to find the fastest way around the track and the right tire size thats my input but do what u want but id get a egt they are cheap to fix and theres a ton of them unlike honda's and stuff they will break the bank getting parts escorts wont

Well, you can always convert it to standard, non svt, brakes, so that they will clear 14" wheels.

I know this is kind of late, but on drommer's table above, the Dodge Neon is listed with a DOHC engine with 132 hp. The DOHC in the Neon (same displacement and number of valves as the SOHC) actually has 150 hp, while the SOHC engine has 132 hp.

Former Neon driver ('98 Coupe SOHC).
