Does anyone know what all Fords from the late '80's era had 14" wheels that will fit on an '88 Escort Pony. I'm wanting to put 14" wheels on to give it taller gearing which should help FE. I know where there are several Ford Tempo's of that era, but will the wheels interchange?

Yep, wheels from a tempo will be a direct bolt on.

    *cough*

Yes, any year Tempo wheel will fit. The 14" alloy ones seem to be only found on the Tempo. 15" alloys are the same as an Escort GT. 14" steelies will be thicker/heavier duty than the Escort ones. No Tempos had 13" rims. My car is using Tempo steelies right now, and I prefer them. I know they can withstand the force it takes to break a tie rod off. The ones I use now had that happen, and they are not bent or warped.

Also, most of Ford's 4 lug products of that time, and slightly before and after, will fit. Mavericks/Comets (if memory serves), Mustang/Capris, XR4Ti, and Rangers that have 4 lug wheels will fit. They have a different offset, though, and will stick out a little further than the stock Escort rims (looks really good).

Focus rims will also fit, but require a spacer, due to being of higher offset than Escort ones.

Rangers are 5 bolt, same as Mustangs, after the Foxes.

Yes, but 4 bolt Foxes existed until '93? I'm not as sharp on pony lore. Also, the 80's Rangers were the 4 bolt ones I was talking about.

What Rangers had 4 bolt? I think even the 2wd were 5 bolt.

    14" focus/contour/cougar/mystique wheels will fit.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll probably just end up getting some off of an older model Tempo since I know where several of them are.

I could have sworn my '93 Tempo Polycasts did not fit Escorts, I need to get my burnt rim down from the attic and double check that, Perhaps I just assumed for changed the pattern in 1990 or so.

Ford changed some of the lug patterns in the early '90's. The wheels for my '88 Escort wouldn't fit the '93 Escort my brother use to have.

That would be because the second generation use a smaller lug pattern.

I have my old 87 Tempo wheels that I use for winter wheels now.

'91 and later Escorts use the 4x100 bolt pattern. Prior to that it was the 4x108.

Have you noticed how much heavier the Tempo steelies are vs. the stock Escort ones? Way thicker steel.

Actually, I originally swapped the 14 inch 7 spoke aluminum rims off the Tempo to the 90 Escort (the car before my current 89), and vice versa. I sold the Tempo with the Scort wheels and hubcaps. So I really don't know how much more the Tempo steelie weighs.

Looking at the original posting date, I think I'm a little late to the party, but I have 14" steel wheels with 195/70-14s on my 1988 GT. They were the stock wheels on a friends 78 Fairmont. The are a little tall, but look and handle great compared to the 165/80-13s that were on my car when I rescued it.

Just last week I pulled a set of 185/70 R14's off a late 80's LTD and slapped them on my '87 Escort. Had to do a little body work cause the tires were rubbing inside the wheel well where the seam for the front 1/4 panel is spot welded to the motor housing. Just heated it up and bashed it over with a B.F.H. No more rubbing and the 14's look great. Even had the original hubs to boot!

I had 175/70, 185/75, and 195/60 14" tires on the Escort, they all seem to fit. I'm surprised you had a problem with the 185/70 Wingnut, since they're on the small side for an Escort tire (195/60-15" are about as tall as 185/75 14")

I got two 14" wheels and tires off of an old Mustang at the JY. The tires are 185/75/14 and were nearly new got the wheels and tires for under $40 including tax. I tried them on front and back and they fit both places without any clearance issues. I'll probably just watch the JY everytime I go and hopefully find 2 more wheels with nearly new tires. I don't really need the tires right now so there's no hurry.
