Hello, I´ve got a ´93 Escort with the 1.9L engine and 5spd tranny. Recently the tranny has started making a clicking noise in reverse. Any ideas? My worry is that gears or something else internal have gone bad. Car has about 88,000 miles on it. Thanks for any info you can provide!

The first thing I can think of that maybe wrong is maybe a CV Joint. I know they tend to click when they go bad. Usualy gets worse when you turn. Might try driving really slow with you door open, or window down and make some S turns to see if you hear anything while going forward. I´m not too sure that it would be the gear itself. Reverse is usually the strongest gear since they are spur gears as opposed to healical gears like the forward gears. Unless you really like launching hard in R (Race gear) It´s pretty tough to break revese withought having something else majorly wrong in the tranny. Just food for thought. Keep me updated if you find anything out.

i have a problem kind of along similar lines: i have same Scort as above. all my gears are fine, my car´s been amazing to me. when i reverse, though, the reverse lights (white ones of course...) don´t come on. checked all fuses, all good, and the bulbs aren´t burnt out or disconnected. any suggestions?

The most common reason for reverse lights not coming on is a misadjusted reverse switch, sometimes refered to as the "PRNDL" switch. Whenever you put your car in reverse this switch is activated by the shifter to turn your reverse lights on. Sometimes this switch will come out of adjustment, or alltogether go bad on you, hence no reverse lights. So if the wires and bulbs and fuses are A-ok that would be the next thing to check. If after you check that and they still don´t work, you could always just harwire a switch to the lights that you can activate yourself, a.k.a. Jerry Rig it. Let me know how it works out.
