Hello, I own a 93 egt with aprox 180,000 miles on it, about 5 months ago i am fairly certain that one of my cylinder rings went out, and i am now about a week into pulling the motor and was hoping for some guidance on what needs to be done to rebuild. I have located 2 motors in town at the local yard, that will cost me aprox. 350$, My plan is to remove the head and really see what is going on, if the motor is not too bad i will just rebuild, but my fear with getting the junkyard motor is that i will also need to rebuild that too, so with a little help from some seasoned feoa members would be greatly appreciated. I am not sure if there is a thread that i looked over for rebuilding your bp, but there is SOO much info here, it is a little hard to search through everything. PLS HELP! Thanks Much, with your help, another gt wont end up as scrap

Mine are 2nd gen. Escorts, LX's, not GT's. I have gotten a few (guaranteed to run) motors from junkyards, and ALWAYS opened them up to check on condition. So far, for Escorts at least, I only had to clean out the piston ring grooves, put on new rings, and reassemble; with new bearings and crank seals. But in all cases I got the head milled to remove the arch, had the valves re-seated, and the water jacket steamed clean. Usually there are one or two threaded holes that i have to at least run a tap into, or put in a thread insert (like helicoil or equal). On one engine the block also had to be milled, to remove corrosin that likely would have resulted in a head gasket going bad. I think it worthwhile.
