i swapped from the 1.9 to the 1.8 used a harness i already had out of a 93 escort gt and the motor came from the junk yard. hooked it up and everything works great with the acception the radiator fan dosent turn on and if i beat on the car it starts to smell like a lawnmower lots of gas and oil and im worried it might be overheating some... think the gauge not working and the fan not working are the same or different problems?

As far as I know some of the sensors are different, like the fan temp switch and the gauge temp sensor.

yes there are 3 temp sensor on these BP motors. there is one below the thermostat, that is your dash gauge, there is one screwed directly in the thermostat housing, that controls your cooling fan, then there is one below that it's a green plug with 2 wires the others are just 1 wire, that tells your computer how hot the engine is. your dash gauge should just be a wire clip on slide on style, fan controller will look kinda like the oxy sensor plug, and the ECU temp sensor is that green 2 wire one.

hope that helps!
