Update on my backup camera. I wanted to get into the settings, and I found the developer gave me the codes to enable EVERYTHING.... <EVIL LAUGH>/

I was going to take my dinner downstairs in the garage, and watch a movie with dinner, but my wife wouldn't let me!!! The nerve!!!

Engine is in, started up, broken in, and ready to be daily driven. I'm so happy to have it running again

This has occupied me with this car since 14 March. That day the wife and I started out driving 2000 miles from zip code 22312 in northern VA, to our place in TX, in zip code 78570; 8 miles from Mexico. The car we used was the one my daughter used to drive, a 94LX 5-speed wagon, and which seemed in good shape. I had done a lot of work on it two years ago. Even though I could hear a slight exhaust leak when started from cold, it was too chilly for me to bother with it; temps in the teens. And the heater blower would not run. The heat we got from the vents was only due to our forward motion, and was not warm enough - till the afternoon of the 2nd day. It was a 4 day drive for us, having taken a southern (gulf coastal) route to have warmer weather.

After about ten days visiting with relatives in Mexico, we started driving toward southern CA, where my sister & her family live; plus we have a cousin in El Cajon and a friend living in Tijuana. After the visits in South CA, we headed for Milpitas to visit a younger cousin, and from there north on I-5 to Seattle; where our grandsons live.

Here is where the trip got troublesome. Near Portland the exhaust pipe at the bottom of the catalytic converter snapped - resulting in loud noises, and the front end of the exhaust pipe scraping on the ground. At a motel I used the utility wire I always carry to support the broken section of exhaust pipe, close to the output from the cat. converter. During the next days drive, from Portland to Seattle, (where it rained for 150 miles) the car commenced running on 3 cylinders. Really weak and not inspiring confidence.

Once settled in at my son-in-laws house, I ordered a replacement cat converter to install. Then I could start up the engine quietly, and look for the reason it was firing on only 3 cylinders. It turned out to be one bad spark tower on the coil pack, and zero spark to cylinder #1. I got a new coil pack, along with new plugs and plug wires, and now its all fixed.

All the time I was working on the Escort, it was in between the daily/hourly light rains. The house is situated on rising ground in West Seattle, with a distant view of Puget Sound.

We have covered 4989 miles since leaving Alexandria VA, have used up 1/2 quart of motor oil, and seem to be getting about 39 mpg.

A little too late but FWIW, when you were in San Diego county, you were near quite the supply of 2nd gen spares.

Should you consider that sort of excursion again in the future, let me know and I can PM you my cell#.

my testing date was changed to 12/31/2999 after renewing my plates this year, and heard that only cars 96 or newer might be the only years that need testing in Idaho from a local shop.
my Cat has decided to take a dump on me and clog up, might be replacing it with this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Maximizer-Header-Manifold) if the emissions law is changing. or I will have to fork over another 300ish for another Cat

I recently bought a replacement cat converter from an ORiellys, for $178. I also see them on rockauto for a little less than that - for folks in the normal federal emissions states.

It was driven with a burnt exhaust valve for the first five years pushing raw gas into the Cat, it's lasted another 5 years after that so not bad I think. Its just starting to clog up

Since my car has California emissions package and my EGR tube comes up from behind the engine from the Cat, I have to get the expensive Cat or it won't have an EGR port on it, or have to convert it to the Egr from the manifold and get the cheap 49 state Cat.
They seem to charge about 50 bucks more just for the damn EGR fitting
    [IMG]
just getting rid of it by getting the manifold and down pipe from eBay and an EGR tube from the junkyard is almost cheaper especially if I don't have to worry about emission test anymore.
