I am looking into converting my 96 with spi swap to run the 97 ecu. Yes, I know it runs fine without, but I would rather have the updated version up and going.
    thanks in advance.

Yeah I've got the same setup and a 97 ecu might be helpful. a pin-out diagram would sure be a lot of help in getting this installed....Do you have an SPI switch or just running the 96 ecu without...because I think the 96 computer does fine with the SPI switch, although a 97 ecu would standardize all engine functions back to the computers original specifications,

I do have an rpm switch running the butterflys. I have the pinouts from a '96 and have compared to a generic version that encompasses '97 to 02. Honestly I dont see a repin as being too much of a problem, almost like repnning a honda and adding wires for vtec, in this case we would be adding wires for spi.
The problem with my generic spi pinout is that it has pins used for the fuel pressure regulator which would not be needed on the '97. I just dont know if these fpr pins would be dead on the '97.
And if I recall correctly, at least I think I heard that the '97 has better fuel tables than the '96

I know that for the 2nd gen Escorts, the Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM) has all of the wiring diagrams including the pin outs for the PCM, and that they differ from year to year - even where the 2nd gen Service Manuals are mostly the same. I got my EVTMs from ebay. They are pretty cheap: I even see one for a 97 right now that would be under $10 including shipping.
I got an EVTM one for each different year of 2nd gen Escorts that I have, since the differences make it worthwhile having the one for each year. (I own a 91, 92, 93, and 94 & have a 95 in the family).

The pin outs did not change for any of the 3rd gens. The Zetec and SPI even have the same pinout. Only difference is any pins that are not used (example: IMRC on the Zetec ECUs) are dead pins. Same thing goes for the 97 to 98 updates. Anything the 97 does not have will be dead. I think the only major differences are pins that are fuel pump related. The 98+ fuel pump is PWM driven so it needs things like the fuel pressure and a pump pulse wire. On your 2nd gen the pump basically runs wide open and is regulated at the rail with vacuum. You simply wire the pump to a relay and switch(ignition).

I have a 1998 and 1994 wiring manual. Glancing over them I can tell you pins 57 and 62 will not work on the 1997. Pin 80 is going to be your fuel pump relay wire (pin 22 on the ecc-4).

Shake, rock on! Just what I was looking for.
As a note I had gotten some years ago, an ecu that was supposed to be a '97. I plugged it in and the car ran it was throwing codes for the fpr, as well as constantly pulsing power to some relay under the dash.

This is perfect. If you notice pin 8 is for the spi which isnt used on the '96. Just need to see if there is a wire there already or if one needs to be run.

Hi guys. Im from Poland and I have Focus mk1 2002' 2.0 Split Port engine car. I want to put a trip computer on it but every scheme of Focus is an european scheme, so fuel consumption option on trip computer isn't working... Other things looks fine - speed signal from vss, fuel signal from tank also looks good. Please help. I know that is a Escort forum, but can you check for me that this plug from 99' escort splitport is the same as in Focus? I cannot find a signal from ECU/PCM which goes from injector to get data about fuel consumption.

    Best regards
    Peter

I can just about guarantee that it isn't the same. Why would you need this injector wire? Why not tap it under the hood or unplug the ECU and an injector and use a meter to find the wires? Also, why not just use an OBDII based trip computer and not have to do all this stuff?
