Hi not sure if anyone has posted this before, but is it possible that I have keyless entry on my 1999 Ford Escort SE? I do not have a power lock button so i would think no. However! One night i heard a car alarm going off and I look outside and there is my escort lights flashing and alarm blaring. I had no clue this car even had an alarm. I dont know too much about cars and less about escort, however I have never seen a car without power locks having an alarm. And this is definetly a factory alarm. There is a light on the instrument cluster marked ALARM! So is it possible that I do have keyless entry/power locks without having a button on the inside? I have to unlock the passenger door by either the key on the outside or by opening the door from the inside. The locks are not able to be pulled up from the inside. SO IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I DO HAVE KEYLESS ENTRY!!?? (Also I have a button on the inside for trunk release if that makes any difference) Any answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

Pretty sure you have keyless, you just dont have the fob. If you want to know for sure, call your local dealer with the VIN, and they should be able to tell you... However:

Step One: "find a box"
Step Two: "cut a hole in the box"
- find a fob (ebay or something)
- follow the link above

-bonus points if you know where step 1 & 2 came from

my old 99 SE had manual windows but it had keyless entry. I had all the wiring in the car (except in the doors) to add power windows, so I went ahead and did that too.

A sure way to check to see if you have keyless entry is to go through the key fob programing sequence. (You'll need to know this if you want to pair your new keyless fob with the car).

In the owner's manual (around page 43) it explains what to do. You put the key in the ignition and without starting the car, you turn it on and off eight times in rapid succession (within 10 seconds). When you're done, the doors should quickly lock and then unlock on their own. This is the signal that you are in programing mode. If the doors don't do this, then you most likely don't have keyless entry.

Ok I saw on another thread where the 97 and 98s are different and say that it's 5 times with the key, when I do that the locks do cycle to lock but not unlock. I looked when my daughter got home last night and I don't see a box. But it was dark etc.... Behind what pillar? Should it be obvious, or have to look a little bit?

In my car there is a piller behind the side carpet on pass side, if it is there it would have two bolts sticking out of it, it is tucked behind there pretty good. Its not real noticeable at a quick glance, I am pretty sure the 97 would be in the same spot, and it should be a grey module. I do remeber something about the programing being different between the two styles.

Here's the manual info for the 2002. I'm waiting to hear back form the dealer to see if I have the option. That's a pisser if I have and did know it all these years.

Programming remote transmitters It is necessary to have all (maximum of four — original and/or new) of your remote transmitters available prior to beginning this procedure. To program the transmitters yourself: • Insert a key in the ignition and turn from 1 (LOCK) to 2 (ACC) and cycle between 2 (ACC) and 3 (ON) eight times in rapid succession (within 10 seconds) with the eighth turn ending in the 3 (ON) position. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that programming mode has been entered. • Within 20 seconds, program a remote transmitter by pressing any button on a transmitter. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the remote transmitter has been programmed. (If more than 20 seconds pass before pressing a remote transmitter button, the programming mode will exit and the procedure will have to be repeated.) • Repeat the previous step to program additional remote transmitters. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that each remote transmitter has been programmed. • When you have completed programming the remote transmitters, turn the ignition to 2 (ACC) or wait 20 seconds. Again the doors will lock/unlock to confirm programming has been completed. Illuminated entry Interior lamps will illuminate when UNLOCK or PANIC control is pressed. The lamps will illuminate for approximately 20 seconds or until the key is inserted in the ignition and turned to ON or until LOCK control is pressed. The dome lamp must be set to the DOOR position in order for the illuminated entry system to operate. ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED) When armed, the anti-theft system will help prevent your vehicle from unauthorized entry. If there is any potential perimeter anti-theft problem with your vehicle, ensure ALL key fobs (remote entry transmitters) are brought to the dealership, to aid in troubleshooting. OL CK ACC ON START 0 I II III 4 3 2 1 Locks and Security 69Arming the anti-theft system Turn the ignition to LOCK, remove the key and press the lock control on the remote entry transmitter.

Good God!! Mine has the keyless and trunk release option too. All these damn years and only $5 on Ebay! My Chevy HHR is one of the few that doesn't have the remote start option because it was rental car company vehicle 1st. I was pissed about that but this is more irritating. The dealer who sold me the escort, it was their loaner car, never gave me nor told me it had the option, just said they could sell me the remote for $70 and they'd throw the programming in for free. I told them I already know I can program it myself. The parts guy who ran the VIN # said, "yeah, some of them do that too." Dealerships, slicker than cat shit on linoleum.

My remote was delivered today so will program that this afternoon when I get off of work, Plan on going to JY this weekend to get a headliner, but got to thinking I know some were prewired for power doors and windows? How hard is it? Like could I find one that has a driver door panel with both power locks and windows and put it in the car with minimal effort or should I just be happy with the keyless? By minimal effort I basically mean plug and play

honestly the only way to know for sure if you have the wiring is to check. if you open the passenger door, you can look how many wires are in the loom going between the door and body. you have to peel the rubber accordian weatherstrip back to see it.
