So I read up on the engine swap post and seen that it said the zetec engine was the only viable option for my year car, but with more research I have read that the 97 escort year wasn't a good choice for a swap since different wiring and the fuel system and some parts were different... was that stuff correct? I would love to do the swap, but wouldn't want to feel like I was beating a dead horse lol.

It's still not that difficult to do the swap with a 97, but you just have to swap some more things. The best way to do it is to find a wrecked ZX2 so you can get everything all at once.

You could also use the fuel rail from an early Contour and run it on your stock ECU.

Does this apply to all 2nd gens with return style fuel systems? In other words, if i wanted to swap a zetec into a 2nd gen the only other thing I would need is the early contour fuel rail to deal with the different fuel system?

OP, find a Contour SVT and swap the 2.5L V6 and the Trans(MTX-75). I know that Contours used the same Zetecs that came in ZX2's so I would imagine that all the mount brackets out of the SVT will work in your car.

Yes and no. Yes, you can get a Zetec to run in a 2nd gen this way. The issue is that the 2nd gen injectors don't flow enough fuel and the engine will lean out on WOT. It may work using the Zetec injectors but I'm not sure how well the ECU it will adapt to the larger size. The SPI injectors have the same flow rate as the Zetec ones so this shouldn't be an issue.

Contour SVT motor bolting in? LOL! No way. The Contour is a completely different platform, if it was a bolt in affair somebody would have done it aleady. Not to mention the 3.0L Duratec is a much better and easier to find motor than the SVT one

So swapping out the injectors and fuel rail will make swapping a zetec into a 2nd gen possible? What if the Zetec ECU is used in place of the 2nd gen ECU?

Does the Contour SVT chassis differ from the regular Contour? I was under the impression that the Contour used the same DOHC 2.0L zetec engine as the ZX2. I can't imagine Ford using a completely different chassis just for the SVT designation. If the chassis are the same and they housed zetec engines logic would say that the motor mounts might be able to be swapped over much like using MX3-GS motor mounts to get the KL motor to fit. What am I missing here?

Then you would have to swap the fuel system and wiring harness out and somehow integrate it into the car. You could probably put 3rd gen or ZX2 dash into a 2nd gen, they are built on the same platform.

What you are missing is that the MX3 and 2nd/3rd gen Escort are basically the same car under the body panels so pretty much everything can be swapped between them with little or no modification. The Contour is a completely different car, to swap the V6 stuff between it and the Escort would be about the same effort as trying to swap a Honda, Nissan, or even GM V6 into it.
